Risks of a very large chain of increments?

Hello. How risky is it to have a chain of incremental backups, let's say 1000 increments? Does anyone have experience with archiving like this? What is the chance that one of the increments will go bad?

How risky is it to have a chain of incremental backups, let's say 1000 increments?
May I ask, what's the use case for such a long chain? Maybe we can suggest other retention options if we know why you need it.
For me, it would be too much risk to rely on a single backup chain.
Also recovering data from this chain can take longer time if the entire chain has to be accessed for the restore.
What is the chance that one of the increments will go bad?
Always expect it to happen. You need your backups to recover from a disaster.
It depends on the storage solution you use. Some storage is more prone to silent storage failures than others. But any storage can be affected by silent bit rot in the file system. The loss of a single incremental backup due to corruption or accidental deletion renders all subsequent recovery points useless.
