Hi

I am using Veeam Backup Capacity Calculator.
https://calculator.veeam.com/vbr/

However, the calculator uses Forwards Incrementals with Weekly Fulls as the Backup Mode.
I would like to calculate Forwards Incrementals (Create synthetic full backups periodically).

Is there any calculator or methods?

The calculator calculates the required storage with periodically synthetic fulls.
What makes you think that it works differently as you are expecting?

Can I put GFS points: 2 weeks , right ?
I am not sure for the difference of GFS points and retention policy..

Also, I put some sample information on that calculator. The bellow is the result.

Backup:21.5 TB
Full backup:10.1 TB
Incremental backup:921.6 GB
Weekly:0 GB
Monthly:0 GB
Yearly:0 GB
Workspace:10.5 TB

In this case, what is the workspace ?

Yes, you can do that.

I am not sure for the difference of GFS points and retention policy..

The calculator calculates the backup chain with weekly full backups, when you put in a number in the weekly field. That could have a better naming or description to make it more clear.

In this case, what is the workspace ?

We recommend to have workspace available of at least 1-2 full backups. This could be used by transformation processes, compaction operation or in case you have issues with the backup chain and are required todo an active full. For me, when I worked for a service provider before veeam, always having the space available for 1-2 additional active full backups on customers environment was important.

1.Reduction (%)
The default Reduction (%) is 50% and is this Veeam recomended value?
I understand the rate depends on the kind of data.
But sometimes we do not confirm backup data when we propose the Veeam to our customer on initial proposal phase.
I would like to know what value I should put when I can not confirm the customer data on initial proposal phase.

2.GFS points
In previous question, I got answer I need to put 2 on Weekly column when I would like to calculate 2 weeks retention policy.
In that case, what value should I put on Daily column ?
The calculated value will change depending on the Daily value.

I would like to know what value I should put when I can not confirm the customer data on initial proposal phase.

50% reduction is an average we see by our customers. We cannot say what you should use.
It depends on the environment of your customer. There maybe data (e.g. already compressed files, some media files) which cannot be compressed that good. So the reduction can be be lower than 50%.

If you want to feel safe and buy more storage, use a lower reduction value. Better to have enough storage from the beginning instead of calling the customer afterwards and telling him that he needs to extend it.

The calculator was build for forever incremental backups with regularly fulls. I assume you will do daily backups.
The number you put in for daily depends on your planned short term retention.

As for GFS point, if I would like to calculate 2 weeks and 3 days retention policy (17 days retention) , I need to put 2 on weekly column and 3 on daily column right?

Hi Keita

If you want to be able to restore a restore point from 17 days ago, you should configure a short term retention policy of 17 days.
If you configure 2 weeks and 3 days, theoretically you will have only restore points of the last 3 days and the last 2 weekends. Not 17 days as you have in your requirement.

I would like to know additional one point.
I will use Agent backup （Managed by agent）to Shared folder and it does not support the GFS. (Only incremental backup and full backup)

If I would like to calculate in this situation, for example I would like to keep restore point on 14 days,
Can I set simply set 14 on daily column?

Sorry, the above question is as for linux backup.

Yes, you can use 14 daily's. Remember to disable the REFS/XFS option in the calculator, if you use a shared folder as a backup target.
The calculator only considers Forward Incremental Backup chains. In the summary you can see that for 14 days you need to save at least 3 full backups. This is expected for Forward Incremental Backup chains with regular full backups.
