M365 Basic Authentication going away
Hi,
I am sure there has been a discussion on this already but I couldn't find the exact question so here goes.... How do Veeam notifications (B&R, VeeamOne, Agent etc) that use M365 as a SMTP server deal with authentication? Is this using Basic Authentication that will be depreciated this year?
Kind regards,
Matt

Re: M365 Basic Authentication going away
Hello,
To add a bit more information and insight to the thread, Microsoft is saying that all apps should be using OAuth: I would ask internally if there is something coming along those lines, but meanwhile, I guess that services like Amazon SES, SendGrid (100emails/day/free/forever), or others would start to become very popular for some period of time until not just Veeam, but every single software in the planet adds OAuth for SMTP Notifications (which sounds a bit overkill in my opinion)
EDIT: Just double-checked, and yes, in v12 this will be addressed and resolved, and it looks really great btw!

Re: M365 Basic Authentication going away
wowzers.... we are a service provider and MSP and look after about 60 veeam B&R and VOne installations and many stand-alone agents that all report in using email notifications. This is a huge issue. So this isn't on the roadmap for V12?
EDIT: Thanks, just saw your edit RE: V12. Great news.

I can confirm that the same new way for Notifications supporting Modern Auth, it will be on VONE, and a few other products besides VBR

Re: M365 Basic Authentication going away
Since Veeam Backup & Replication v12 is probably not reaching us users until next year, does Veeam have a solution to fix SMTP notifications for product versions older than v12?
Because I think a lot of customers are using Microsoft365 when using SMTP notifications, and if Veeam v12 is not coming out this year, it's gonna create a lot of problems.

Hi Simon
SMTP Basic Auth can still be enabled in your M365 Tenant for a single user. Microsoft will not disable this capability.
You can use this user for sending SMTP Notifications until our new versions are released:

Best,
Fabian

I hope we get more notification options in the future such as webhooks allowing us to post backup job statuses directly to Teams, Slack, and ntfy.sh to push it to my phone
