Design recommendations

Post by andreas2012 »

Hi,

Design overview https://ibb.co/LkGryxV

We have started to implement the secondary site, and was wondering about a few things.

We have now two repositories (both are Linux xfs immutable), we take backup of primary site save it to repository 1, and have created backup-copy-jobs to save it to repository 2. This works fine.
Now we are going to take backup of the machines (physical and virtual) on secondary site, save it to repository 2, and create backup-copy-jobs to save it to repository 1. I guess we should create some proxies on the secondary sites ? If we do now I guess it will use the one from primary site and that would be slow.

Since the backup server is on primary site, and we take backup of physical and virtual machines on secondary site, and store it to repository 2, is there anything we need to consider ?
Is the system so smart that it will not go back to primary and then back again to secondary to save the data, or other things.

Any other things to consider, or recommend ?

Thanks for reply

Hi Andreas,
1. I guess we should create some proxies on the secondary sites ?
yes you should create at least one proxy on the secondary site and select it in the backp jobs for the secondary site to make sure you traffic goes from the servers on site 2 to the repo on site 2 without first going back to site one.
Since the backup server is on primary site, and we take backup of physical and virtual machines on secondary site, and store it to repository 2, is there anything we need to consider ?

the backup server itself is more or less irrellevant as it will only receive controll and management data but not the actual backup data.
As long as you got a proxy on the secondary site and configure the jobs properly you should be fine.

If you bandwidth between the sites is so weak that you even need to optimize the management traffice you can thing of guest-interaction proxies as well.

What is the connection between the two sides?

Hi,

Thanks for making it clear. Just so I know, the proxies are only used for virtual backup and not for the physical machines right ?

Between primary and secondary site there is a dedicated 10Gbit fiber link.

Glad it helped.
Yes proxies are for the VMs. the Agents will do it themselves.

That is a good solution. Proxies at both sites required

If you are using CDP, or want to have a quick solution in an outage, leave your VBR server at the DR site full time.
