Hyper-V server 2019 as a Backup Repository Server

Post by sabicao »

Hi.

As a repository server I'm thinking of using Hyper-V Server 2019 (instead Windows Server 2019 or Windows 10) because it is completely free.

Note that I am not talking about Hyper-V role in Windows Server installation. I'm referring to a different Windows product called "Hyper-V Server" which is much like a Windows Server Core installation limited to the Hyper-V role.

IIRC, this was mentioned as an ok scenario in earlier versions but I don't see it in v11 or v12 docs.

Is this supported?

Hi Fernando,

All supported OS are listed on this page. I wouldn't go this path, in theory, it could work but it's not something that our QA engineers tested and we cannot guarantee the reliability of such a setup. Moreover, our support won't be able to provide you with a private fix in case of a technical issue. I strongly recommend taking one of the supported OS.

Thanks!

MSFT doesn‘t support it anyway. It is not for production use in mind.

It's a bad practice (multiple drawbacks and no benefits). However, if you have Windows Server 2022 or 2019 then why do you need anything else that complicates the setup, such as this additional VMs running in Hyper-V on the very same server? Just use the server itself as a repository.
