Move Backups NTFS to XFS/REFS

Post by staley »

Is there a way to determine space requirements needed when using the new v12 move feature? Specifically when moving from NTFS to REFS/XFS?

Our existing repositories are on legacy hardware that needs replacing. We're in the process of spec'ing out new hardware but having trouble figuring out how much space we'll need. Existing repos are on NTFS and the plan is to move them to XFS.

We've tried the Veeam Capacity Calculator but it doesn't quite cover our scenario unless we run it for each server in our jobs. Since we have hundreds of servers we're hoping for a more efficient way to determine space requirements. Maybe it would give us a close enough guess to run the calculator for a few servers and extrapolate the savings across "like" servers in our environment.

Can the new move feature do something like a dry run with predictions on space required?

No, it has no such functionality unfortunately. Plus space savings are very environment-specific. So for most precise results, I personally would do a POC move for one job and use the achieved space savings for approximation purposes.

Thanks Gostev, the POC approach is a good idea. If we don't come up with a better method, we'll probably go that route.
