Building test environment V12 with onprem S3 storage

Post by Markus M. »

We currently preparing an onprem S3 object storage system.
I'd like to test the new functionalities of V12 like backups2Object-storage in this PoC.
Since I don't have enough physical ressources for creating test workloads (Hypervisor, VMs), idea was running a B&R V12 server "side by side" with our V11 productive environment and then backing up (some selected) same workload on both systems.
Only need I see so far is that Veeam services on Hypervisors would be updated to V12, but this shouldn't cause any trouble?

Or did I miss anything crucial?

Thanks!
Markus

Hi Markus

You can do that if your hypervisor are vSphere hosts. Just don't run V11 and V12 backup jobs at the same time.
In case you are using HyperV, the Onhost proxy components will be updated and your V11 server won't be able to protect this VMs anymore.

Hi Fabian,

certainly, I have Hyper-V hosts :-(
Scheduling of the backups on productive V11 vs. test V12 wouldn't be a problem in the PoC.
AFAIR, wasn't there an option to use an offhost proxy with Hyper-V to come around this limitation?
I have a standalone Hyper-V Host (with just Test-VMs, anyways) which I'd like to use for that.

Thanks for this quick reply!

Off Host proxies are complex.
If your plan is to build a test environment, why not using the standalone Hyper-V Host for the new V12 backup server?
Just do backup some test VMs from the standalone Hyper-V host.

That should do for testing the new features.

Hi Fabian,

Not sure if I was precise enough explaining the environment:
The standalone Hyper-V Host with the Test-VMs is also part of the productive environment. And I definetly don't want to mix test- and productive environment items.
With your suggestions and having a look into Hyper-V guide regarding the requirements for an off host proxy, I 'd better setup a further separate Hyper-V Host assigned exclusive to the V12 test environment.
I think there is some hardware for this left in the shelf :-)

Thanks,
Markus
