How do I get rid off my entire backup?

Post by noniqu »

Questions sounds scary, but my situation is simple:

We recently set up Veeam for Microsoft 365 and started by syncing our entire organization.
Now I added all the exclusions we need and I would like to start over with a fresh backup that doesn't include all this unneeded junk.

How would I go about this?
Could I delete everything from our scale-out repository or is that gonna break stuff?

Hi,

Well, first and foremost, scale-out repositories do not exist in Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 :)

Next, I see a few possible ways:
1) (a more safe option) If you want to free up repository space consumed now by unneeded objects (mailboxes, etc.), you can selectively delete them using PowerShell.
2) (a longer option) If you already reconfigured your backup jobs by adding exclusions there, all the unneeded objects that are not backed up anymore at some point will be automatically removed from repositories by retention.
3) (a more scary option) You can simply start from scratch by either creating a new repository or manually deleting all the data from existing repositories.

Thanks for your answer. You are right, I could've sworn it was called scale-out repository when I set it up, but apparently I meant "object storage repository".

So given I really wanna start from zero, I could simply
- delete the backup job,
- wipe the entire object storage (Backblaze B2)
- create a new backup job in the same object storage
?

Yep, this would be the easiest way if you don't need your older backups. A new repository can be just a new 'folder' in the same bucket on the same object storage.
Before wiping your current object storage repository, make sure to remove it first from the VB365 console to avoid any issues and remaining repository locks.
