Veeam Copy backup to S3 object Storage

Post by sti »

We at current make Incremental/weekly synthetic full backups on our Proxies Refs with local drives
We would like to have imlutable backups to S3 object storage

In a lab with virtual S3 appliances
We have seen that in SOBR, there is an option to actually create immediately a copy to S3 object storage added to the SOBR from within the job section.
but it doesn't allow scheduling when you want the creation of a 2nd copy to the capacity tier to take place in V11a. It is actually kicking of immediately after the backup to the primary tier completes.

In order to respect the backup window , this extra copy will slow down the Proxy local disks as it will simultaneously process other backup jobs and copies to object storage at the same time.
So that option seems less suiteable to do.

We also have the option to schedule copy-jobs to actually have a 2nd copy, which of course allows periodic scheduling.

The question is :
If we create a copy job to e.g. S3 object storage (provided it is supported ?) , will the veeam metadatafile be on the object storage as well or not ?
The reason is we need to understand if we have true immutability for both the vib,vbk and .vbm files.

I've read that a SOBR can be configured to contain metadata on the capacity tier as well over powershell. Is it a requirement to configure a SOBR ?

Stefan

Hello Stefan
We have seen that in SOBR, there is an option to actually create immediately a copy to S3 object storage added to the SOBR from within the job section.
This setting in the Job is not related to capacity tier offload.
but it doesn't allow scheduling when you want the creation of a 2nd copy to the capacity tier to take place in V11a. It is actually kicking of immediately after the backup to the primary tier completes.
At the step where you add the object storage as a capacity tier, you can configure the window when offload to the capacity tier is allowed to run. This is what you are looking for. Change the allowed window to the time you want to allow the offload to happen.

This question is not connected to the first one. Meta Data for offloaded restore points will be stored on the capacity tier. If you loose your backup server, you can connect your object storage to a new VBR server and import the backups. Then start the recovery of your data and VMs.
