Backup Repo Rebuild

Post by Zew »

I'm doing something I haven't tackled before but I figured it would go like this:

1) stop Backup Jobs associated with the file repo.
2) Copy all folders n files to some alternative storage.
3) Rebuild the array with new disks.
4) Copy contents back to rebuilt array.
5) Ensure infrastructure access remains unchanged.
6) Rescan repo, and it should say "all's good".

My Questions are:

Do my steps make sense?
What would happen if I forgot a folder?
-would the backup job know the source files are gone and simply do an active full?
What if an incremental file is missing?
What if a file gets corrupted during transfer?
-I'll admit I'd normally love to use robocopy or rsync, but the NAS doesn't seem to support those.
-I'm also not doing hash checks, as again it doesn't seem to be available in the NAS UI tools.

Hello Aemilianus

Can you please share how you use the NAS? As a network share (SMB/NFS) or via iSCSI? This helps for a recommendation about the steps.
What would happen if I forgot a folder? would the backup job know the source files are gone and simply do an active full?
I expect the job showing a warning because metadata files are missing. You must start an active full manually.
What if an incremental file is missing?
It depends from which chain. In the active chain, expect an error in the next job run. In inactive chains, backup job will not show any warning.
What if a file gets corrupted during transfer
A scheduled healthcheck is required to detect such corruption. Without healthchecks or Surebackup jobs, you will see the corruption first on a restore.
