Some Physical Infrastructure Machines Creating Multiple Backup Entries

Post by Drew_Parker »

I've encountered an odd situation that I am having trouble coming up with a solution for. I have several protection groups created to back up some physical PC's using Veeam B&R. I've noticed that some of these machines (this usually comes about after restoring the OS image to new hardware (same PC model/chassis but would be different hardware id/mac addresses etc.)

To try and describe this better here is a basic description of what I'm seeing in B&R:

Machine Name: Restore Points:

Machine1 15
Machine2 1
Machine2 1
Machine2 1
Machine2 1
Machine2 1
Machine2 1
Machine2 1
Machine3 15

So far, I have rescanned the protection group, removed and re-added Machine2 to the protection group, uninstalled the veeam agent from "Machine 2" using Veaam B&R and then reinstalled the agent. This seems to be a repeatable issue when have to build an image on a new chassis, but it does not occur with every protection group I have set up.

Any help or wisdom is most appreciated

Thanks,

Drew

Hello Drew

Welcome to the forum.
We track agent backups from over the BIOS UUID of the protected machine.
If you restore to new hardware, you will have a new BIOS UUID. Therefore it will show as a new machine in Veeam, even if it has the same hostname.

Hey Fabian, thank you for the reply. I understand that the different BIOS UUID would cause a new entry, but why is it creating a new entry for every backup? That's the issue I can't seem to resolve. If it created a new entry and began adding incremental backups to that entry, that would be no problem, but if I run the backup job 5 times, it creates 5 individual backup entries for this machine.

Hi Drew

That's unexpected. It shouldn't do that for incremental backups.
Could you maybe open a case with our customer support?
Our support team can check the log files why this is happening.
Please don't forget to provide me with the case number for my own reference.

Thank you again, I have opened Case #06067211 and included backup logs and a screenshot of the symptom I'm experiencing.
