Teams Private Channels Backup

Hey,

I know this is not possible at the moment.
So the question is why is it not possible and will we see this working in the future?

For us this is a pretty big feature we need.

Hi Moritz,

We had to omit this support because the APIs for working with chats in private channels were missing. This feature may be added in the future if we get all the needed APIs.

I am mainly interested in backup up the files in private channels. So if you can do that already it would be a great addition even without the chats.

As a workaround, you can create a SharePoint job and back up an entire site created for the private channel.

yes you are right I can do that.
But the team members create private channels whenever they want and these channels will not be in any backup job unless I search for them and add them manually afterwards.
Thats not very practical.

That's right. Unless you create an org-wide job for SharePoint only or do some custom scripting to query such new sites for backup.

We have the same issue, also want to backup private channels, especially the files. Do you know, if it will be possible in the future?
In the meantime, can you explain how to create the org-wide job or how a scripted query for such new sites would look like?

Hi Christine,

Support for private channels is on our roadmap for future releases.

For now, you can, for example, select your Organization for backup and keep only sites in its processing options, as described here. The backup job will protect all sites in your tenant, including those created for private channels.

So the first option would save the SP Sites, but not the messages in the Channels. That could be sufficient for us, we have to evaluate it.
The second option seems to also only save the SP Sites and requires global admin credentials. What is the advantage compared to the first one?

It would be great to have a feature in the next release.

The script allows you to create a backup job with only private channel sites. If there're many sites in your tenant, this could be a preferred configuration in terms of performance/load. But, of course, it depends on how you back up other sites, i.e. if it is one job for everything or they're distributed between multiple jobs.

Hi Team,

When going through the VBO backups for Teams I noticed that private channels are not being backed up. I've also tried going through the Explorer for Sharepoint but that also didn't show the private channels. Is there a restriction from the side of Microsoft?
In almost every department Teams Site we have a private channel containing data for management. And this needs to be backed up offcourse.

Is this something that is on the roadmap for VBO?

Yes, it's the same exact code. "Veeam Data Cloud" runs on stock "Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365" software.
