Backup Copy, Copy Job or Export Backup

Post by TDG »

Hi I have a remote site with Veeam 12 backing up all my VM's to local storage - So far so good (Planning to backup to Wasabi. Just waiting for the licence upgrade :D ) Till then I need to select some important VM's and (Like AD's, File server etc..) keep a copy in our HQ (Just in case if there is a major issue on our remoter site) which is linked by VPN & B/W is not an issue. Not sure what option I can use ? Backup Copy, Copy Job or Export Backup ? Or any other ? I can bring up a hardened Linux repository or a Windows Server repository in our HQ if indeed for this ? Maybe configure a secondary destination for this job ? Just wanted to know a simple/suitable option  Happy Friday

Hello TDG

Backup Copy --> Will do regular copies of entire backup jobs (single machines can be excluded)
Copy Backup --> One Time copy of all backup chains of a selected machine or entire job
Export Backup --> One time export of selected single restore point of a machine

If I understand your goal, you need regular copies of these selected machines till you have access to the object storage functionality.
If you only want to copy newly created restore points, then backup copy job would be the best option. Exclude all machines you don't want to copy. The target can be hardened repository or a windows server. A hardened repository will give you extra protection till you have Wasabi in place.

Yes, both repositories are using similar ports (Data Mover ports), but they also have their own ports. As an example SSH for the initial deployment of the hardened repository. Or RPC/SMB ports for the windows server.

Also I created few hardened Linux repositories using this method (Under 10 mins) on a bare minimums Ubuntu install & It's working fine

Python script to quickly setup an immutable repository in 10 minutes

Any objections ?
