Physical hardened repository server - Using as NBD?

Post by Backup.Operator »

I have configured RHEL 9 on a physical server as the Veeam Hardened Repository.

Would it be possible to use the server above as NBD proxy server ?

Hello

Yes. Possible starting with Veeam Backup & Replication v12.

OK, so how does it works, because the target VMs and the physical Hardened Repo is on a separate network subnets and geographical location (different data center)?

NBD proxy doesn't require connection to a target vm. NBD proxies must be able to connect to the source host:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120

But with the information that your hardened repository is in another location as the source host, I wouldn't use it as a NBD proxy. I expect better backup performance with HotAdd Linux proxies directly on the source hosts.

Especially if the throughput between both locations is not at least 1Gbit. The proxy will compress and deduplicate the data before sending it over the link to the backup repository. With the proxy on the repository server, the entire source data must be read over the link between both datacenters. With the proxy on the source site, compressed/deduped data will be send over the link.

@mildur,

Yes, I have deployed 4x Windows VM as Veeam Backup Proxy on each vCenter site.
I guess, there are no significant benefits in making the Physical Linux-hardened repo in the main data center as the NBD proxy.

Thank you for your suggestion.
