Issue with Linux Agent 6.0 after BUR v12 upgrade

Post by pls »

Case # 06094029
Prior to upgrading to v12 I read where Linux Agent 6.0 was not compatible with RHEL 6.1 so my intention was to not upgrade the agent based on the below from the user guide. I discovered that a few hours after the upgrade the agent upgraded on our Linux servers to v6.0. The support engineer on the case is now telling me that I cannot go back to Linux Agent 5.0. Is that true?

From user guide
Integration with Veeam Backup Agents and Enterprise Plug-Ins
If you use Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows or Veeam Agent for Linux 5.0 or later, they will continue working after upgrading to Veeam Backup & Replication 12, but new features implemented in Veeam Backup & Replication 12 will not be supported. In this case, you can upgrade Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows or Veeam Agent for Linux to 6.0 later if the support of new features is not critical for you.

From support engineer
Again v6 is not supported on 6.1 as stated before and because you have upgraded to v12 it will automatically upgrade to version even if you revert back to v6.

Hello,
do you have the "auto-update backup agents and plugins" checkbox enabled?

Best regards,

Yes, that was it. I have now created a new protection group that only contains the Linus servers with RHEL 6.1 and set it to not auto update backup agents. Now is there an easy way to get back to the Linux 5.0 agent for this protection group?

V12 deploys V6 agents. But you could do a standalone agent. I did not test it, but it might even work with protection groups with pre-installed agents if you use an old agent and use the XML file from V12.

If you create a protection group for Computers with pre-installed agents, you will get the rpm file plus an XML file (plus readme etc.). I never tried to use an old RPM with a new XML file, but it's worth a try if you don't want to use standalone agents.

With the help of support the below steps were used to downgrade the agent to 5.0
Please run the following action plan to put v5 agent back on the server.

Disable backup job

1. Make sure protection group is set to not install or upgrade the agent.
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120
Uncheck "install backup agent" and "Auto-update backup agents and plug-ins"

2. Uninstall the current v6 agent which will remove all components on the Linux server
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120

3. Download the v5 VAL packages from the repository to the server below, would depend on version of Linus you have
kmod-veeamsnap-5.0.2.4567-2.6.32_131.0.15.el6.x86_64.rpm
veeam-5.0.2.4567-1.el6.x86_64.rpm

4. Install the packages from the server as directed here:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/archive/ag ... e.html#rpm

I had to then rescan the server before the backup would start again
