Install and backup Veeam 365 on B&R VM

Post by f.neumann »

Hi,

usually with small customer (1x VMware Host, 5-10 VMs) we're running Veeam Backup & Replication as VM on same host.
B&R currently being backuped by Configuration Backup only. (no full VM-Backup).

Now implementing Veeam 365 Backup with ~10 365 Users, which option:
- Install Veeam 365 on same VM as B&R and backup whole VM using B&R itself including Veeam B&R Configuration and V365 Data?
- Install Veeam 365 on dedicated VM and Backup with B&R?

So is backing up B&R full VM itself using B&R generally supported, but not recommended?
Or is this unsupported and unusable in this case to include V365 on same VM with 3-2-1 Rule.

It's about keeping it small and not wasting overhead in such small environments for antivirus, monitoring, windows-server license,...

Thanks in advance!

Hi Florian

We don't recommend to install VB365 and VBR on the same machine at all. But it's possible and supported.
Please also make sure to know follow the content of this kb:
https://www.veeam.com/kb4325
Now implementing Veeam 365 Backup with ~10 365 Users, which option:
Is it 10x M365 users or 10'365 users? For 10'365 users I would go with dedicated servers and definitely object storage.
Even for 10 users I would start using object storage instead of physical disk.
Your overhead with physical disks is much higher than just using a public object storage service. You will require less storage (better compression of VB365 data), you won't have physical disks in your servers which are half empty.
Also keep in mind that some features like immutability or backup copy are only available for object storage. And future developments may only be made available for object storage repositories.
So is backing up B&R full VM itself using B&R generally supported, but not recommended?
Or is this unsupported and unusable in this case to include V365 on same VM with 3-2-1 Rule.
It's supported. But please make sure that you still have the VBR configuration backup for any case.
In case the VBR backup server is also a VBR repository server, make sure, that you split backup data from VBR and VB365 to two different volumes on that server. You don't want to backup VBR backup files. Using different volumes allows you to exclude the VBR backup volume.

Hi Fabian,

it's 10x M365 users, so small deployment.

So VB365 Data will be on second/third virtual disk and i might backup this single VM including VBR and VB365 using VBR.
As VBR backup files are not stored inside VBR VM there will be no need to exclude specific volumes. Full VM Backup should be possible. Additionally configuration backup for VBR.

Thanks!
