Backup VBR VM itself

Post by f.neumann »

Hi,

is it supported (even if not recommended) to let Veeam Backup & Replication running within VM on single Host backup its own VM?
We'll have Configuration Backup enabled as well for Veeam but there might be 1-2 further applications / data within same VM as VBR that should be backed up as well.

According to https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120:
"It is not recommended to back up the backup server configuration using backup jobs in Veeam Backup & Replication. For backup, Veeam Backup & Replication uses VM snapshots. During snapshot creation and commit, the VM freezes for some time, [...]"
But this should only affect VBR Configuration Database and no other application aware processing within same VM?
It's a really small deployment of 2-3 VMs.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Florian

It's just not recommended. But still supported.
If you use a Veeam Agent to backup the backup server, you won't face the issues (disconnection) mentioned in the user guide. That normally happens when you run a VM snapshot. The VM can be frozen for a few seconds. Veeam Agent does not create VM snapshots. And I assume from the other topic, that you don't have iSCSI LUNs connected to the backup server?

Hi Fabian,

thanks! That helps!
Yes, there's no iSCSI-LUNs on vSphere or Backup-VM. Using NFS-/SMB-Target as backup-repo in those environments.

Veeam Agent is probably a good alternative!
