Reading an old backup vbk file

Post by fafa24 »

Hi,

We have an older VBK file on an offline store. The VBK file is over 2.5TB big. However, when we import the file to VBR, it only shows one VM, which is a small one (around 100GB). The VBK file should have 4 VMs in it. It looks like the other VMs are damaged, but since the VBK file is big, perhaps there is a way to recover the other VMs and make the data in some way readable.

We opened a support ticket, 06195372. The answer we got so far is that we should try to open it with the Veeam Extractor. We did that, but with the same result, just one VM is shown.

I would like to bring this issue here to the attention of the development team.

Thanks,
Edy

Hi Edy

Keep working in the Support case is the best way to go forward. If necessary RnD will be involved by support.

Is it possible that the other VMs were deleted from the backup some time ago? In that case, we delete any reference to those restore points in the backup files.
The backup file stays the same size with per-job backup chains. But the backups are deleted inside the file.

Hi Fabian,

Not the other VMs were not deleted from the backup. I haven't heard from the support for 24 hours. I think that I just passed the 1st level.

Hello Fabian,

Yes thank you I got now an answer from Support. Veeam Validation doesn't look good. It's just one VM in it. It seems the other ones got deleted. I also send the job logs. We are wondering what happened. The host in question had RAID issues and crashed. It appears the RAID has been unstable for some time and VBR couldn't really back up.

Hi Edy

I checked the case again today.
From the logs it seems that the deleted item retention removed the VMs from the backup file accordingly to the setting in the backup job.
