Different question rin terms of the implementation of Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365
Dear R&D,
we are planing to implement Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 into our environment. As a company we are already using VBR.
Please allow me to ask two questions in terms of implementation procedure:
1. Is it possible to use Veeam Backup and Replication and Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 on the same server in production, is this scenario supported?
2. I´m wondering if there is the backup option reverse incremental / incremental in Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 available similar to VBR. Or is each backup in Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 a full back of the mailboxes.
We have to minimize the utilization of the band width therefore it would be great to have the option to backup only the changes that happens per day for the mailboxes.
Thanks for your help.
with kind regards
Oliver Wirth

Re: Different question rin terms of the implementation of Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365
Hello Oliver
Hardware resources are shared between both products. Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 will take away a large amount of memory for it's jet database based repositories. And Memory will also be required for Veeam Backup & Replication to run performantly. You have to size your backup server correctly.
Please also be aware of the shared explorer compatibility matrix:

Best,
Fabian
Yes, it's supported. But not recommended.1. Is it possible to use Veeam Backup and Replication and Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 on the same server in production, is this scenario supported?

Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 is forever incremental. There won't be regular full backups as in Veeam Backup & Replication.2. I´m wondering if there is the backup option reverse incremental / incremental in Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 available similar to VBR. Or is each backup in Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 a full back of the mailboxes.
The chance that Microsoft is throttling your download requests against SharePoint/OneDrive is higher than reaching your max bandwidth throughput. How large is your download speed? We have to minimize the utilization of the band width therefore it would be great to have the option to backup only the changes that happens per day for the mailboxes.

Fabian

Hi Fabian,
Thanks for your swift response.
Just to clear, the first back is a full and all following backups are forever incremental.
Is there a similar option as in VBR.
Advance Settings--> Backup --> Create synthetic full backups periodically
Waiting for the internal - info about the download speed.
Regards,
Oliver

Re: Different question rin terms of the implementation of Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365
You're welcome.
But I don't recommend todo that. Especially if you have immutable repository (hardened repository), you need regurlar full backups. And with reFS or XFS repositories, you won't require additional space when doing regular synthetic full backups (FastClone).
Best,
Fabian
Correct.Just to clear, the first back is a full and all following backups are forever incremental.
Disable synthetic and active full. And you get a forever incremental backup. Is there a similar option as in VBR.

Hi Fabian,
again thanks for your swift response.
Just to be sure in Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 there is also a checkbox for full back and synthetic backup , correct?

Oliver

Re: Different question rin terms of the implementation of Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365
No, Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 doesn't have such checkbox. Running regular full backup against Microsoft 365 is not recommended. Depending on the size of your M365 environment you would need every time multiple days to create full backups because of throttling situation.
And backups are stored different compared to Veeam Backup for Replication. We don't have dedicated "backup files" for each backup session.
Best,
Fabian
