Veeam v6 : agent used for VSS and Indexing

Post by codot »

Hello,

I've checked the documentation about the VSS and Indexing functionalities, the FAQ, but couldn't find an answer :

- What component deploy the agent used in the virtual machines to trigger the VSS snapshot and the indexing of the file system ? The backup server ? The backup proxy ?
- How is this communication established ? Through the networks ? Whats ports ? Through the VMware Tools and the ESXi host ?

Thank you !

Clément.

Hi, Clément.

- There is no persistent agent. The backup server injects the runtime process.
- Connection over the network is attempted first (via RPC), and if it fails then guest interaction API is used (injected into guest via ESXi host and VMware Tools).

Thanks!

Thank you Gostev. For the network injection, is it the same process as the one used by the Backup Server to install and update Proxy et Repository agents (TCP and UDP ports 135, 137-139 and 445) ?

What component is responsible for injecting the agent ? The Veeam Backup Server or the Proxy Backup Server ?

What ports are involved with the ESXi hosts when injecting the agent through the VMware Tools ? 443 (HTTPS) and 902 (TCP) ?

Thank you very much.

Regards,

Clement.

Hi Clement, all required ports are described in the User Guide. The backup server is responsible for injecting the agent. Thanks!

Ports used for Backups with vss

Post by Spex »

[merged]

Hi,

In the documentation there is no entry for communication port between
veeam backupserver <----> vm to backup
veeam backup proxy <----> vm to backup

If I'm using vss (application aware mode) or filesystem indexing I have to put a credential into the job.
On with channel is this credential used - only over vmware api's?

Does this meean I can even backup a vm that has no network connectivity using vss and indexing?

Regards
Spex

Hi Tris, have you had a chance to take a look at our UG for this info?

Hi Vitaly/Gostev, I have the user guide in front of me and can see a list of ports in a table on page 58 and 59 however I cannot see anything stating port used by Veeam Backup server to trigger VSS on 'VM to backup' guest OS - when guest OS is windows.

Additionally, if there is anything needing to be opened in the opposite direction; 'VM to backup' TO backup server?

Can you help me out?
