native Microsoft 365 Backup Solution (Microsoft Syntex)

Post by christian_k »

Microsoft announced this week that they will provide their own M365 Backup & Archive Solution in the future.

I - and probably most of us on here - am curious about how this will impact Veeam's offering for M365 Backup.
I know it's early days and not much is known yet, but it would be great and helpful to track any news in a thread.

Hey Christian,

Lots of communication will be sent out this week from Veeam, and it will impact our offering... on a good way :-)

We are one of the launch partners of this offering, and will have integration with M365 Backup API's which means that in the future (when it is released by MFST) you will be able to create a new Backup Job Type (Name not decided but let's call it M365 Backup job type for now) and see those backups AND Veeam backups in the same console, offering a full DR strategy. As you said yourself, much needs to be finalized in the future, but it will lead to a lot of new opportunities. Both on functionality standpoint and the fact that MSFT now clearly states that backup is needed, which means the market will grow and customers will be more interested!

Also looking forward to what integrations are coming with this. Hoping for a "better together" relationship :)

What are the differentiators(besides having ms365 dataprotection integrated in VBR) currently known for Veeam comparing it to the things MS is building themselves? They’re not only releasing an API, right?

That would be awesome, I'd love to be able to see both in the same console. The biggest challenge we have right now is how painfully slow restoring from cloud S3 storage is wit MS365 backup, so being able to leverage an MS function within Veeam for what I imagine would be faster restores since the data is "closer", would be awesome.

Hi All,

We expect the two solutions to be very different. Speed would be the main benefit of the M365 backup via the new APIs, while Veeam will still provide much more granular and flexible options (scheduling, restores, support for Teams protection).

MS Planner is yet out of the scope of the new Microsoft APIs (but is planned to be supported by Veeam in the future).
