Suggestions for (software) raid controller for immutable repo

Post by Thomas_VDB »

Hi all,

I have a (reused) SuperMicro server with 10x 3TB drives for storage.
There are also 2x DOM modules to boot from.
The system was originally used as a TrueNAS system (software raid ZFS), so there is no hardware raid controller present.

I would like to repurpose this system as a Veeam immutable repo, so I'll install linux (ubuntu) on it.
However the 3TB will appear as individual drives (jBOD).
I would like to make a RAID volume from them, to use a one big repo.

What would be the best way to reuse this server as a linux immutable repo?

Thanks,
Thomas.

Use mdadm and create a raid of your choice from it. It won't perform as well as a hardware raid, but it will achieve your goals. RAID 60 will give you better resiliency. RAID 10 will give you better performance.
