Veeam 6 different LUN id on ESX and Backup server

Post by us-pata »

Hi,

Will it work (or break something) if the backupserver has different LUN id's to the same LUN on VmWare server?

For example:
- Backup Server sees LUN id 1
- VmWare Server sees LUN id 32
The LUN's are the same disk, containing the same data.

Will Veeam understand that it is the same disk?

Can you please clarify these questions:
-What is a VMware Server? Is it ESX(i) host?
-Have you mounted the same LUN to backup server and ESX(i) host?

I'm sorry if i was not clear, but hopefully this will help.

1. VmWare Server = ESXi 5 host
2. It is the same LUN, but different id's

No, Veeam will not understand that this is the same disk, exactly because of the different LUN IDs.

Are you sure about this? the luns on my veeam server are numbered differently than my esxi5 hosts, and it's been working fine for quite some time.

Yes, I am sure about this as Veeam matches a LUN to a datastore using the LUN ID. If they are different, then of course they will not be matched to each other. But may be you are thinking about some other IDs.

Specifically, I am talking about scenario of presenting a R/W snapshot of your LUN as another LUN to a backup server in hope that the backup server will read data from there. This will not work, because the new LUN will not be matched to a datastore. But, if you just connect the same LUN to both ESXi and backup server, then of course this will work.
