DR Planning Documentation without VRO

Post by martintillbrook »

Hi All
Apologies if this is a repeated question but I couldn't find any answers so far!

I've got a fairly new vmware estate (v8) with VBR running (v12) quite happily backing up to three different locations, one of which being offsite/immutable etc etc and I'm quite happy with where we are. I do however, need to write some documentation

I would dearly love to get VRO in my estate/arsenal of tools however, for several reasons, I can't at the moment! This means I need to write some DR planning docs myself.
My question for the forum is whether Veeam provide any guidelines/examples etc for backup and recovery testing etc. I know VRO will do a lot of this for you but I could do with some guidance for writing this myself.
Equally, of course, if anyone out there has some example docs they could share, that would be equially amazing! I'm fairly rubbish at writing documentation and just need some guidance if possible!
Thanks in advance!

Hello Martin

Let's see, if other members can provide some sample documents. Such documentation may contain some of those topics:
- Where to get replacement for your hardware (hosts, storage, network, workstations) and worst case a new datacenter if they was a fire. Restoring to the cloud may be an option.
- Important people/roles involved in the DR
- emergency numbers
- Restore order for your workload (some machines will depend on other machines to run first)
- Expected RTO (recovery times per machine, service and entire environment
- steps if you have faced a ransomware attack (they may be different, because you don't want to restore your machines to production without being knowing for sure that they are not infected)
- ....

For the technical part, VRO leverages Surebackup and SureReplica jobs. You can use those without VRO.
Get familiar with that feature to design your automatic recovery testing.
