I apologize for the newbie question maybe I have a mental block or something! lol
We've had the licenses for a while but for some reason I don't seem to quite understand how to setup the Agent or the Console properly. Part of this is that it's hard to do it under a production environment..
I have a mix of physical servers, all windows and Hyper-V VM's. 2 of my File servers are physical and 3 are VM's on other physical servers, what is the best practice to install the agent?
For what I learned I'm supposed to install the agent in the physical box and that should take care of the box and files (and VM's on it), but what about the VM's? if I need to recover a single file or folder, how is the agent going to recover just that instead of the whole VM?
Thank you in advance!

Re: Veeam newbie, installing agent on VM File Server?
Hello,
You have VM's running on Hyper-V. Best practice would be using Veeam Backup & Replication, where you can back up and restore the Microsoft Hyper-V VMs, https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120.
As I understand you also have MS Windows Physical servers. You can add those MS Windows server into VBR Infra, hence leveraging Veeam Agent for MS Windows, https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agent ... tml?ver=60
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120
You can also do File Share backups from VBR, https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... file_share.
If you need restore "single file" from VM's backup, you will need use feature VM Guest OS File Indexing, which allows you restore file and folders. Please check User Guide for more details: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120

Re: Veeam newbie, installing agent on VM File Server?
Hello Hugo
To add to Rovshan answer, you may use Veeam Backup & Replication to deploy and manage Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows on your physical servers.
1) Create a protection group and add your physical servers
2) Create a Backup Job to protect the entire protection group
Please see our user guide to learn how todo it: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120
Best,
Fabian

A small correction. Guest OS File indexing is not required for file level restore. File Level restore of Windows VMs or Windows Agent backups will "just work" without any additional settings. Guest OS File Indexing is only required if you want to leverage Enterprise Manager for searching files and folders in your backups. If you need restore "single file" from VM's backup, you will need use feature VM Guest OS File Indexing, which allows you restore file and folders.
Best,
Fabian
