VEEAM 11 tape backup performance has issues
AVAST was causing BSOD in Windows 7 Pro with VEEAM 11. I can't upgrade until I replace the motherboard. AVAST caused issues and I removed all of their components. The HP LTO 3 drive used to be fast. Now, I am getting 1-2 MB/s on tape backups. I am going to run chkdsk and defrag after the HP LTO 3 finishes.
C: is Windows 7 Pro
HP LTO 3 and HP LTO 4 on SCSI controllers.
I have Windows 7 Pro and VEEAM 11. Before the BSOD, everything was great. I backup to 3 hard drives Linux and Windows 11 Pro. I know it doesn't support it.
All drives WD Black drives
M: WPMM22, Desktop22, Syslog22
N: FamilyPics, Windows 11 backup
O: DropboxGUI22
Chkdsk ran fine. Quick and no errors.
Defrag showed 0%
Running SFC /Scannow.

Re: VEEAM 11 tape backup performance has issues
SFC /Scannow found nothing wrong.
HP LTO 4 works fine.
Tried to download HP LT&T. HPE no longer has it.

Maybe it helps if you update or replace the existing tape driver?

Is this only occurring with Veeam or with other software as well?

HP LT&T said drive failed. I will try a cleaning tape and drivers. Could be the drivers are corrupted from Avast.

Worth uninstalling Avast and performing a clean install of the drivers.

Re: VEEAM 11 tape backup performance has issues
I believe it is the controller causing the issue. I was cleaning out the spare parts room at work to send stuff to recycle. I found two SAS LTO 4 tapes drives. I bought a new controller and cables for them. Installed them in my tape server at home. Both worked great. Due to lack of usable slots, I moved the LTO 4 to the LTO 3 controller. It did the same thing, 2MB/s. I ordered a new video card that is PCIe 1X so I can put the LSI PCIe SCSI controller back in for my old SCSI LTO 4 drive. If everything works out, I will have 3 x LTO 4 tape drives. New LTO4 tapes coming this week. In the future, When I upgrade the motherboard, I will put M.2 drives on it and free up drive bays.

Re: VEEAM 11 tape backup performance has issues
I installed the new PCIe x1 video card and LSI SCSI PCIe x8 SCSI controller in the first PCIe x16 slot. The two SAS drives are on a LSI Logic SAS controller in the other PCIx16 slot. The two PCI x16 slots when in use together slow to PCIe x8. The SAS controller has one tape drive per interface. Connected the SCSI cable to SCSI LTO 4 tape drive. It took some time to get everything working. I had to remove the backup and tape jobs. Recreate the media pools. Set Parallel processing for 4 tape drives. I have an Intel I7 2600K and 32 GB of RAM. The three tape drives are running concurrently.
I have three hard drives setup to separate the backups to the three tape drives. In the future I will be adding a 4th hard drive. The combined backup speed is over 230 MB/s. Each drive is 71-80 MB/s. It is convoluted how VEEAM configures everything. I checked the CPU and motherboard. They don't support Windows 11. I will upgrade in the future. It is working...So Far.

Re: VEEAM 11 tape backup performance has issues
I can run three concurrent disk backups to three WD Black hard drives with no issues. The I7 2600K processor does 4 jobs at a time. I switch to Disk to Tape and can run 3 concurrent tape backups on three LTO 4 tape drives with speeds of 75-80 MB/s on each drive. Over 260 MB/s combined speed. Utilization of the CPU is 22%.
