Hyper-V VM backups after replication

Post by Osti »

Hello,
I hope you can give me an answer to my question.

Environment; 2 Hyper-V standalone hosts. Each with X VMs.
In VBR I have a backup job for host 1 and one for host 2.
One VM (lets say VM1) has been running for several days on host 1 and there are several backups (Inc, Full) for this VM1.

Now I have replicated VM1 from host 1 to host 2 with VBR and performed a planed failover.
The new name of VM1 is now VM1_replica
The VM1_replica is now running on host 2.
I renamed VM1_replica to VM1.

VM1(replica) will be backed up now with the other backup job of host 2.

To access a backup from 2 days ago, I have to look in the "old" backup job of host 1.
Is there a way to "merge" all backups of this VM back into one chain?

Thank you so much.

Technically, from a hypervisor point of view even if these VMs have the same name they are two different virtual machines. You can't merge the backup chains, sorry.

Ok,

and if I failover to the replica on host 2 and after some time I do an failback to host 1 then it will be the „same“ vm and the original backupchain will continue?

Another question: And how is the situation if I have an hyper-v cluster and the replication will be done by hyper-v itself. The replicated vm will than also have an new ID(and backupchain)?

Thank you.
