On-Premises workload backup-copy to an object storage

Post by storageguy »

Hi,

Need some inputs or ideas.

We are backing-up our on-premises workloads. The main backup goes to on-premises repository and the backup copy goes to a Cloud Object Storage.
If suppose the whole on-premises Datacenter goes down for some reasons. How can we able to recover from the backup copy located in the Cloud Object Storage?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

If we assume your backup server is lost when the on-prem datacenter goes down, then you would need to deploy a new backup server elsewhere, connect to the object storage and you would be good to recover. The easiest would be to restore the configuration backup.

@haslund, that would be a challenge if their is only a single Datacenter like ours and no available resources to spin-up a VBR. It would be great if we can spin-up the VBR in the cloud and be able to use it to restore. Just a thought.

Thanks

Some service providers offer that type of recovery from S3 like you are mentioning.

However, you may want to look into using replication offsite or a service provider if you need to be able to spin up your VMs quickly. Feel free to reach out over DM if you want to know more.

Veeam can provide you with offsite data protection (like backing up to a S3 bucket). How you recover from that is a different problem.

As stated above by tjurgens-s2d and haslund, restoring back from the cloud is very doable. Many service providers can also offer you a warm site DR plan if replication is too expensive for you. For warm site the SP will have resources in their cloud available for you in case of a disaster and often will restore your VMs into the segregated environment for you during a disaster. Normally they will give you one free test (which I highly recommend doing). Your company's RTO and RPO and of course budget will be important factors in determining what service you choose. Off-site replication to a service provider will allow for the quickest recovery. Also keep in mind that on top of normal snapshot replication, Veeam now also offers CDP (continuous data protection) to Cloud Connect. If you choose the service provider route you should be able to point your configuration file backup to a cloud repository (make sure to encrypt the configuration backup) as well which will make things easier when and if you need to redeploy a new VBR server on prem.

Thanks for the elaboration Geoff. I didn't want to turn this into a sales pitch since I work for an SP, but I'm glad you jumped in to elaborate what an SP can do for customers.

No probs. I don't work for a Service Provider anymore but just wanted to offer an honest take on what I saw and how they really helped customers restore data :) .
