Veeam B&R console as administrator

Post by TobiasS »

Hi everyone,

We recently had some issues restoring guest operating system files from vms. We tried to restore files with the veeam user role "restore operator". This veeam user is a local windows user, but not an administrator.

For security reasons we don't want to give the restore operator local administrator rights, but after talking to veeam we learned that this is necessary. Case #07091234.

Now to my questions:
- Has anyone had the same requirements to restore files with the veeam user "restore operator" who is not a local administrator?
- Has anyone found a solution to this problem without giving the restore operator local administrator rights?

Hello Tobias

Local administrator permissions for files and folders are not required since V11:
https://www.veeam.com/veeam_backup_11_0 ... new_wn.pdf
No local admin requirement — The backup console no longer requires operators to use an account with the
Local Administrator group membership on the system that runs the console. This helps to improve security
by not having to assign administrative privileges to all console operators. When console update installation
is required and for restore scenarios that actually do require Local Administrator privileges, you will be
offered the opportunity to restart the console under an administrative account
They are required when you need to update the console, or if you need to mount your backup file to another machine then the mount server. In case you have used a remote console.
Besides that, local administrator permissions should not be required.

Best,
Fabian
