Issue to configure notification with SSL

Post by matteu »

Hello,

I'm trying to test a configuration but I can't apply it.

Enable email notification
SMTP server : smtp.domain.com
From : test@domain.com
To : test2@domain.com
Port : 587
Connect using SSL : Checked

I can't apply the configuration because Veeam displays an error : "Unable to connect to SMTP server because of invalid credentials or connection settings".

I don't have SMTP server to know if it's because it can't reach it or other reason but if I don't check Connect using SSL, configuration is applied.
Maybe someone know the reason here ?

Thanks

Hi Matteu

With SSL enabled, the backup server tries to check the certificate. If there is no server reachable on the specified port and FQDN/IP, it will fail to check the certificate.
Let me think about it how it can be optimized. Because it seems for non-SSL connections we just store wrong configurations without checking the SMTP connection.

Either we allow all sort of <wrong configurations> and the user must click <test message himself> or we also check the SMTP server when saving for non-SSL configurations.
Could you please share the use case behind storing a configuration when there is no SMTP server available? I need to understand why it is important to be able to store <wrong configurations>.

Best,
Fabian

It s just because I try to automate configuration of vbr with powershell and I notice different behaviour with ssl or without.
I don t have mail server on my lab so I just would like to be sure it will work on production environment
