New user Question on possible Veeam use case

Post by cANtbeLiEvenOtbuTter »

Good Day

Looking to swap out a Windows Server backup, and Paragon Protect & Restore in 2 different networks

Each network has 1 Windows server, and some Windows 10 workstations

Would like to be able to perform the following backups

1) Backup Server and Workstation to ESATA Hard drive attached to the server (8 x 16tb drives, 1 active each week) (Primary backup)
2) Archive daily Primary backups (ESATA) to live secondary backup stored on server Partition (RAID10) to allow online live access to many multi weeks of backup

Note: Could backup to server (for performance) and then Archive differences to ESATA drive (Not a option with Paragon)

With options/features
1) Stagger backups (server and workstation) to limit writes against the ESATA drive
2) Exclude Partitions from backups (ie. where secondary backups are stored on server)
3) Dedupe backups to store only unique data (to save on backup space)
4) Ability to rotate out secondary backups and setup new one every 6 months (Keep a total of 12 weeks of backups online)
5) Access current and previous online rotated secondary backup
6) Recover of backups from bootable media (through network or via backup drive directly connected to machine to be restored)
7) Email backup results
8) compress data on workstation before sending through the network to the server (verses uncompressed data)
9) ability to verify backups

Anythoughts if this would work with Veeam is appreciated.

Thanks

P.

Hello Paul,

All the mentioned features are available in Veeam Agent for Windows solution, but you can centrally managed such agents via Veeam B&R control plane via Agent Management functionality.
Stagger backups (server and workstation) to limit writes against the ESATA drive
Local disks are supported as a destination.
Exclude Partitions from backups (ie. where secondary backups are stored on server)
Yes you can do that by Selecting Volumes to Back Up.
Dedupe backups to store only unique data (to save on backup space)
The data is automatically deduplicated and compressed.
Ability to rotate out secondary backups and setup new one every 6 months (Keep a total of 12 weeks of backups online)
Sure, Backup to Rotated Drives would do it.
Access current and previous online rotated secondary backup
Yes, you need to connect the drive and start the recovery from any restore point.
Recover of backups from bootable media (through network or via backup drive directly connected to machine to be restored)
Here you go: How to Perform Bare Metal Recovery.
Email backup results
Included but you would need to configure it: Enabling Email Notifications.
compress data on workstation before sending through the network to the server (verses uncompressed data)
Works out of the box, data is sent to the repository after being deduplicated and compressed.
ability to verify backups
Possible via SureBackup job but would require Veeam B&R control plane.

Thank you!
