Which Azure SQL's can be backed up with Veeam

Post by sandsturm »

Hi
Azure provides the option to use Azure SQL database or Azure SQL managed instance. Is Veeam Azure backup capable of backing up both variants? And furthermore, is it possible to have PITR (Point in time restores) for both variants?

thx,

Hi,

Both are supported and can be added in the backup policy.

Timeframes can be selected using the restore points step in the restore wizard.

Hi Niels

Thanks for the fast answer. I saw the infos at your provided "restore points" link, but can I really do Point in time restores? That seems to me more to be only backup points of a fullbackup. I'm talking about a transactionlog backup where i can choose the last transaction or a specific timepoint to restore the data.... Is this really possible?

thx,

Transaction log backups are currently not supported due to Azure API limitations but it's something we plan to enhance in a future release once it's available via API's.

Just one more question. Is it possible to restore databases (Azure SQL managed instance) backed up by veeam to an onpremise MSSQL server? I know that these databases are encrypted and the only way to "export" data unencrypted is via *.bacpac method. How do you do the backups from SQL managed instances? Are you able to create "real" backups or do you use the bacpac way to get the data from Azure? Our idea is to have Azure SQL managed instances backed up with Veeam to a storage account and then copied to onpremise (via veeam VBR?) where we want to be able to restore data of these backups. Is this a usecase, you can support?

Our backups are made via bacpac but we do not offer a direct restore to on-prem within the products.

Backup copy is however supported for the backups so an export could potentially work on-prem.

I'll note it down as a feature request and enhancement.
