Hello Devlopur

Welcome to the forum.
It depends on what you want to protect.

You can write directly to tape:
- Files and folders on file shares (SMB or NFS)
- Files and folders on managed servers (Windows or Linux)
- Objects from object storage (AWS S3, S3 compatible, Azure)
- Volumes of storage devices with NDMP protocol.

What cannot go directly to tape:
- Backups created by Veeam Agent
- Backups created by VM backup job

Hello devlopur

That would then count as "Backups created by Veeam Agent" and have first go to a disk repository.
But you could use a File To Tape job to backup specific files directly to Tape. That would allow you to skip a disk repository.

In theory you could write all files from "system" to the tape as well. But it won't be possible to restore the entire client (bare metal recovery) from the tape in case the client doesn't boot anymore. Our recovery media requires backup files (VBM, VBK and VIB) to be on a disk repositories.

Hello Mildur,
As it is falling under "Backups created by Veeam Agent" so as per i understood it is not possible till date to direct backup to tape in this scenario.
Am i right?
Thanks

Hello guys,

Thank you for your feedback! Unfortunately we do not plan to add tape support into the agent app but you can use Veeam B&R backup to disk to tape approach (agent job > B&R repository > backup to tape) or backup directly from the mentioned host via Veeam B&R file to tape job.

Dima and I provided an another way:

"File To Tape" jobs: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120

You can use it to backup important files from your workstation/server directly to tape.

Not if we use Hyper-V Backup.
First the VM has to be backed up correctly.
ok i could backup repo files to tape, but this is indirect and will waste space.
File is not possible for same method as Hyper-V i think.
Anyway...
its a feature request.

File is not possible for same method as Hyper-V i think.
You can create a file to tape job from any host. If the host is not Windows / Linux you can add the needed folders as SMB/NFS.
And i want to know that if i am moving a backup to tape using Veeam or else moving a file to lto tape , will it gonna make the same structure i.e, Microsoft Tape Structure
File structure is preserved.

So File to Tape Job would be identical to normal Hyper-V Backup Job with pre/post Scripts, VSS, etc?
I doubt so

No, of course these are completely different jobs. The first is agent-based file-level backup of individual files, and the second is host-based image-level backup of entire VMs.

yes, thats what i think, so it is not a solution for this thread to use filecopy, if you want to backup hyper-v direct to tape.
