How to backup the existing VM of ESXI 5.5 and vSphere 5.5 and prepare the migration to latest version ESXi 8

Post by zincal »

Dear All,

Sorry to be noob, I am new to VMWare and Veeam.

I have been assigned a maintenance project, with Host and VM vSphere 5.5 and ESXI 5.5, All physical hosts are HP ProLiant DL380p Generation8, including the NAS and SAN system. The system has been operate for more than 10 years.

OS of VMs are either Windows Server 2012 or Windows 7.

Due to fail to update the antivirus and some hardware failure, client now planning a system upgrade. But before they make any decision, I would like to backup ALL VM and ensure ALL VM can be migrated to latest ESXI Version (Maybe ESXI 8). Can Veeam Agent (Free version one) able to backup and migrate the VMs? or Need a licensed one?

Hello!

Your client CAN use free Veeam Agent to back up all of their VMs, but they must do the entire process fully by themselves.

On the other hand, for you to do this FOR your client means delivering them a service using our free product, which is specifically prohibited by Veeam EULA. So if YOU want to do this for them, then you will need to license our agents - otherwise you will be in violation with EULA.

Thank you.

Thanks, I can make a technical proposal to them so them can decide to do it themselves or purchase a license to do so.

Moreover, I would like to know is it possible to backup and restore the VSphere 5.5 with all config and ESXi VM using licensed Veeam product and restore in VSphere 8 ? or only VM can be backup and restore to new ESXi 8?

for Above case which license should I choose? I mean the paid one.

Yes, it's possible with Veeam Agents.

With regards to chosing the licensing, please contact your Veeam sales representative and they will advise the best approach depending on your scenario.
