Supported Workloads for Backup to S3 Bucket

Post by DaStivi »

Hello,
is there ah list with the supported Workloads (Backup) to a S3 Bucket (as primary backup repo? is this even a recommended scenario?)

so basically, in the past i learnt not everything is supported...

like application backups or NAS Backup (oracle, etc. ) that weren't supported on specific repository's.... not sure how it is ith S3?

thx
best regards
Stephan

Hi Stephen,

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120

You can see a list of the supported job types for Object Storage Repositories in the above link. It's very much so a supported and recommended approach with the S3 buckets as the primary repository.

what about instant-restore with S3 direct backup?

and immutablility is also supported on primary-s3 backup?

Hi Stephan,

1. Yes, you can perform Instant Restores as well as other restore operations for supported workloads as per the User Guide links above.
2. Immutability is possible if the Object Storage provider you use supports immutability and is compliant with the S3 specifications. I recommend if you are still in the process of picking an S3 provider, you can check the Veeam Ready page to find a list of confirmed working S3 providers with immutability as well as a reference architecture for on-premises S3 servers.

As for the application plugins to Direct Object Storage, it's a known request at this time, but consider your interest heard and noted!

Hi Stephan,

Veeam has also added SOSAPI (Smart Object Storage API) for S3 workloads which adds significant improvements https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120
I made sure to spell that out as the SOS part can appear in a different context :).

Keep in mind though there are some workloads that can't leverage SOSAPI yet like M365 backups, Nutanix etc. This does not mean they won't work just that you will not be able to take advantage of the benefits.
