While completely unrelated to Proxmox, reposting here merely for awareness:

Support for host-level backup of Oracle Linux KVM hypervisor is now generally available.

Download the plug-in now > Veeam Backup for Oracle Linux KVM
Datasheet from Oracle > Oracle Linux KVM and Virtualization Manager

Our dedicated subforum for oVirt KVM based hypervisors (RHV and OLKVM) > oVirt KVM
Please post any OLKVM-related questions there and the responsible PM will answer.

This is another thread I've been following. Good read. Think I'll try and give PMX a test run this summer. Maybe even OLKVM.

When can we expect some updates regarding the support of Proxmox?

As Proxmox is behaving very strange in terms of trainings (no reselling etc., only a few training partners that MUST not resell their seats) and strongly favouring its own backup solution I do not see it yet as an attractive alternative.

So for me Proxmox -1

I had already expressed exactly this fear, namely that Proxmox with the Proxmox backup server is not interested in Veeam integration: post515406.html#p515406

Well, fear not because the answer to your original post is based on my email conversation with the Proxmox CEO.

Thanks for the information.

This makes things clearer about what we can realistically expect.

+1 for allowing full segmentation from the virtualization host/vm to the veeam server. This limitation exists right now for both for hyper-v and agent based backups.

A two-legged (one in the virtualization host network, another one in the network of the backup server) backup proxy VM that is hosted on the virtualization host (PVE) will be ok, won't it?

Thanks

Meaning only the proxy VM will need access to Veeam server? That will be an improvement but not ok. With VMware you can have the Veeam server fully isolated not allowing any incoming traffic.

What do you mean? You need some connection between VBR and vCenter/ESXi/Cloud Director anyway. How would VBR manage backup operations without that?
Or did you mean that any traffic from the virt.host/guest VM should go only to a repository, and never to VBR server?

Thanks!

I never used Cloud Director so i can't comment on that. but for vCenter/ESXi backups to work with Veeam you only need a one way connection Veeam > vCenter/ESXi not vCenter/ESXi > Veeam

PTide wrote: Mar 21, 2024 1:18 pm Hi,

Thank you for the input. Speaking of Proxmox - what's your production storage type? Proxmox supports around half a dozen of different storages, which one do you prefer?

Cheers
For us currently, Ceph and NFS. We are looking at LVM or ZFS over iSCSI.

+1 for proxmox

We have around twenty small customers in France. Most on ESXI with 1 to 3 VMs. Backup with VEEAM or NAKIVO.
We have started migrations on Proxmox.
Typically SSD BOSS RAID-1 EXT4 for Proxmox installation + RAID Hardware DELL PERC (RAID5, 6 10 according to the client) on LVM-Thin for VM. The OS are small and the change mainly concerns the data so there is a VM OS System in simple local backup, the data is in backup in online file mode for the moment. But it is certain that it will not work for all types of clients. For the portion of customers from Canada (around 70), the majority are in hyper-v and they were planned for ESX before the vmware acquisition. Some paid the vmware tax, some stayed on hyper-v and a few on nutanix. But in our internal discussions I think that hyper-v and proxmox should remain in the long term.

sorry again for my English, I'm just a poor Frenchman! :D

Running multiple small VMware environments - mostly 1-5 Hosts, around 10-50 VMs.
Mix of local Storage, vSAN and FC-SAN. Proxmox looks like a promising future for these setups.

But - not without Veeam!
Is it already clear, that Veeam will support proxmox in future or is this just some testing for now? And are we talking about weeks/months/years until first preview/release?

Would be great to have better separation options than with hyper-v and on-host proxy.
I really liked those small footprint Linux-proxy-VMs with hotadd of disks in Veeam + VMware.

We need a few more weeks before we can start talking about specific plans.
And yes, we did play with hotadd for backup :D it works!

@Gostev ...you're really pushing me to build up a host or 2 & play with Proxmox, aren't you?.... ;)

And Instant Recovery works also perfect. I have use this for migrations from HyperV to Proxmox, but with a Dymmy ESXi to Create the NFS Datastore. ;)

Great news - can‘t wait for it! And… we really don’t want to move our customers to hyper-v. Trying to keep existing VMware environments alive until you‘re ready with proxmox-support.

I have about 30 clients with VMWARE ESXi and Veeam Backup.
Like others, I will not continue with Broadcom.
So it's time to change to another way.
For me the situation is simple : I will choose the same road as Veeam... because I dont' want change my backup tool.
So if it's Proxmox, go for Proxmox !
And if it's XCP-NG, go for it.
I have already tried Oracle OLVM : it's not viable on a single-server infrastructure : OLVM want a shared storage, not a local folder.
I will try on a bigger POC next weeks.

oVirt is designed as a virtualization platform with shared storage in mind, however you do have a few ways to use local storage:
1) Deploy a local NFS server on the host and add it as a NFS storage domain.
2) Use a data center in the local storage mode, then you will be able to deploy a local storage domain. For more information about this option, see here.
