v12 with MSFT SQL
Hi,
i have to install a new VBR v12.1.2 server with MSFT SQL.
Is there any documentation for installing the SQL server express just like the v11 setup does.
Permissions, features, …
Thanks in advance
Karsten

Re: v12 with MSFT SQL
Why not install V11 and upgrade to 12.1.2.
I don't know if there is any documentation on permissions features etc.

Re: v12 with MSFT SQL
Hi Karsten,
Would you please clarify what v11 setup documentation are you referring to? If you're going to use a new database, the account specified in the install wizard must have CREATE ANY DATABASE, or ALTER ANY DATABASE permission. If the database already exists, the account must have db_owner role. Also, you may try to create a test database manually using SQL Server Management Studio to make sure that the account has all the necessary permissions.
Thanks!

Re: v12 with MSFT SQL
Hi Petr,
thanks. Im after the lazy approach. I just want to install SQL the way the v11 setup did but with a 2022 SQL and go on with the v12 setup, select SQL, next, next, finish.
Best regards
Karsten

We don't recommend using SQL for new installs, especially SQL Express due to all its limitations. Plus in general SQL is a dead end as eventually we will drop its support completely. And even before that happens, some new capabilities will *require* Postgre to function.

Re: v12 with MSFT SQL
good point, Anton. Thank you
my only pain point is the update process. For MSSQL it is all in Windows update.

Yes, we're taking over it's patching as well (when it's installed locally).

I appreciate it is not best practice but we use Veeam Agent for Windows to backup our Veeam server. We aren't big enough to have a DR site and it may save us having to do a full rebuild in the event of an issue. We do it outside of hours that it will be running any backups and we also backup the Veeam server configuration as a fall back.Mildur wrote: ↑Jul 11, 2023 11:44 am Hi Florian
It's just not recommended. But still supported.
If you use a Veeam Agent to backup the backup server, you won't face the issues (disconnection) mentioned in the user guide. That normally happens when you run a VM snapshot. The VM can be frozen for a few seconds. Veeam Agent does not create VM snapshots....
Best,
Fabian
With the move to PostgreSQL, will PostgreSQL support be added to Veeam Agent for Windows or does it not matter if we only ever envisage doing a full restore of the server?
