Best practice upgrading Veeam 12.0 to latest 12.1

Post by check4backup »

Hello,

upgrading Veeam is usually straightforward. Since I had some problems when upgrading from 11 to 12, I wanted to be better prepared now.

In the documentation I read:
If you use remote backup consoles, upgrade them manually using the product ISO file. Unfortunately, if
you upgrade from versions earlier than 12 (build 12.1.0.2131), the automatic upgrade is not supported
due to the major version number change.
What is meant by this? So far, the manual upgrade has never worked for me, because the separate VM with installed console is also the tape server on which other services such as Veeam Data Mover Service or Veeam Tape Access Service are installed.

If I upgrade the Veeam backup server, the remote components are automatically updated. For example, the Veeam Data Mover Service is already up to date on the tape server, but the console is not yet. Previously, I always received the error "component missmatch" when upgrading manually via the ISO. But the automatic upgrade (simply start the console) worked.

Would it be a good idea to deactivate the checkbox "upgrade all remote components" during the upgrade and then immediately upgrade the remote console on the separate VM? This means updating the console before updating the remote components?

It's a minor release this time so don't worry about any of that, just upgrade while keeping the default options intact... so basically don't overthink it, that would be my advice. Thanks

Hello,

unfortunately it did not work. The upgrade of the console causes problems if there are already updated components on the server on which the console is to be updated (such as the Remote Tape Access Service). The console setup then wants to uninstall some components, but this also runs into an error. I have created a support case because it is a technical error.

Hello,
Unfortunately, the case doesn't work the way I would like it to. Is it normal for support to only help if they have administrative support access to the backup server via Webex or an old TeamViewer 13? Our rules do not actually allow remote access.

Hi, Customer Support is a separate organization from R&D so we can't comment on their requirements and whether something is "normal for support". You should contact the Support Management directly with such queries (there's the corresponding functionality in the Customer Portal). Thanks

Hello,
After completing the case you can say:
If there is a separate server with the console in the Veeam deployment and there are other components installed on this server, then the components must not be upgraded during the upgrade. You must first update the console and then the components.
