VM removed from task

Post by User4812 »

Hello,

Please help me with some information.
I have Veeam Backup and Replication 12.1.0.2131 and I have a job that backups 4 VM from 2 different physical servers with a retention policy of 1 restore point and Active full backup scheduled weekly.
Standalone Host 1 - 1 VM on it.
Standalone Host 2 - 3 VMs on it.
The problem is that Standalone Host 1 was down last night and the one VM last succesfull backup was from 08 July 2024 and it was deleted.
The 3 VMs from Standalone Host 2 were succesfully backed up.

Is it normal this behaviour? I remember that in the past after a failed task, the backup files weren't deleted, but I am not sure if the jobs have multiple VMs from different Standalone Hosts in it.

Hi User4812, welcome to the forums.

When you say it was deleted, do you mean that in the job statistics window it told that the backups were removed for that machine? Can you perhaps share a screenshot or the text of the message you saw?

I suspect you might have Deleted Item Retention enabled and that may have been triggered, but if you can show how you saw the backup was deleted, we can advise better.

Deleted item retention is set to 14 days. But I see on Deleted Item Retention page that it says:
Limitations for Retention Policy for Deleted Items
[Per-machine is disabled] Retention policy for deleted items does not function if you enable synthetic full backups and active full backup.
I have active full backup enabled for every Tuesday.

I can't see a "delete" message or anything like this in the job statistics window, but when I try to restore entire VM, the VM is not shown anywhere.
Also in the Backups view the VM is not shown.

I'll attach an image in a moment.

Hi User4812,

For Deleted Item Retention, please note that the comment you quoted is only if Per-Machine backups are disabled; by default, this option is enabled in Veeam.

However, if you don't see it in the job statistics window like I linked above, then it's best to open a Support Case and let Veeam Support review. Be sure to include logs for the affected job for Support to review.

Please share the case number here once created. Thanks!
