Quantum i3 Tape Library Offline

Post by nunciate »

Is anyone else having this issue? I opened a ticket with Quantum but wondering if anyone has the same problem.

I have 2 Quantum i3 tape libraries. One in our prod datacenter and on in our DR location.
I have designated the entire top right magazine (25 slots) as the IE area in both libraries so there are no tape slots in that cartridge that are assigned to an active partition other than being IE slots.

I export tapes weekly to the IE slots using Veeam. I go out to the library and pull the cartridge. I remove the tapes and replace them with scratch tapes, then reinstall the cartridge.
When I come back to Veeam the tape library is offline and all jobs have stopped. I did not export tapes that were in use or in drives.
A rescan of the library brings it back online.

In the library itself, there is no indication that the library was in a Not Ready state nor that the partition was taken offline.

Hi Alan,

You're opening the magazine door, correct? On most tape hardware, this will offline the library (partition) on the tape server the hardware is connected to. A rescan (manual or waiting for the automatic rescan every 3 minutes) should detect when the library is online again as you noted. This won't show in the library as "offline", just that the tape server will not see access to the library (If you check device manager during this time on the tape server, you'll likely either see that the tape hardware is missing entirely or it's in a warning state).

But it is expected behavior, it's not isolated to Quantum Libraries.

Interesting. Yeah, I am pulling the IE cartridge out and putting it back in after swapping tapes.
Seems counterintuitive though. The entire point of having an IE cartridge is to be able to import/export tapes without affecting operations.
I used to have Quantum i80 tape libraries which got replaced by these i3 libraries and I never had this issue with those.

I will update this if Quantum comes back with a way to keep it from happening.
