Feature Request - Configure VMware Backup Proxy in an appliance

Post by miyu.masuda »

Anyway, we want to make the VMware Backup Proxy into an appliance.
The larger the environment, the more VMware Backup Proxies are needed.
Windows/Linux license is a serious issue.

Is there any hope?

Hello Miyu

Can you please elaborate on "Linux license is a serious issue"?
You can just deploy 1-* Ubuntu machines from a vSphere template and use it as a proxy. There are many more Ubuntu distributions supported. No Licenses need.

We know about the request to provide appliances for our products.
But your license challenge can already be solved without having a proxy appliance provided by Veeam.

Hello, Thanks for the reply.

"Linux too" was a bit misleading.
We use the same VMware Backup Proxy to backup VMs in the VCD environment to DataDomain using DD Boost and to replicate to the VCD environment at the DR site. Therefore, we have no choice but to use the Windows VMware Backup Proxy.
Naturally, the DR site also requires proxy, so the number of required proxies is doubled.
The fundamental issue is that only a Windows VMware Backup Proxy can act as a Gateway Server.

The plan to deliver DDBoost support on Linux gateways: post521253.html#p521253

Our goal with the upcoming VBR on Linux is to provide Linux support for all backup server components.

I assume that would solve your license challenges?
