Move to new server question

Post by costasppc »

Hello all,

We "inherited" a Veeam Community installation, which we need to move to a new server. There are docs for this, however in this installation, there is this configuration.
Backup repository is a local OneDrive folder (which syncs to OneDrive). Then there are scripts that mirror this folder to a local USB disk.

How we will migrate this installation to a new server, and keep the chain?

Best regards

Hi Kostas,

This KB documents how to move backup files to a new location and map existing (and new) jobs to the backups: https://www.veeam.com/kb1729

So process should be as simple as move the backups to the new server, install Veeam Backup and Replication to the new server, perform a configuration restore or migration to the new Veeam installation, then simply remap the backups as per the KB.

Thanks!

Thank you,

My issue is that the repo they created is actually a local OneDrive folder. If I connect this OneDrive folder to the new server, and let it sync, is there a chance of setting this repo to match the migrated installation (and keep the chain).

Best regards

Hi Kostas,

Regrettably, I'm not sure we'll be able to comment on this specifically; I guess I misunderstood your set up and understood that local copies were kept, but it sounds like everything is in OneDrive?

This is regrettably not exactly a supported scenario if the backup files are being offloaded in full and leaving just "stub" files, so I'm afraid we won't be able to comment in full on this element. What I can advise is try syncing the folders and then try to import the backups by the .VBM file, but please be prepared that you may need to start a new backup set.

Thank you, I thought so... Shall I migrate the old server to the new, or start fresh?

Best regards

There's not really much preference in this matter except for your own :) I would just use the Migrate feature of the Configuration Backup Restore (see link in my first post), once you have installed Veeam Backup and Replication to the new server. Be sure to encrypt the Configuration Backup to avoid having to manually re-enter all credentials/passwords after the migration/restore.
