Replicated VM backup to tape possible ????

Post by plavielle »

Hi Community.

I have a simple question : can i backup replicated vm on tape ?????

On my backup server (VBR 11 and nextweek VBR 12) i replicate all my VM.
On this server i also have LTO6 TAPE. But for now, to backup vm on tape i need to backup locally.
My goal is to not have 2 time the same data just to backup to tape.

Any ideas ????

Thanks

Hi plavielle,

At this time, the path for backup to tape is Production > Disk > Tape, so there must be a disk based backup for the Backup to Tape to work. When you mention replicate here, just to be clear, you're referring to a Replica job that keeps a "ready to go" copy of the VM in your environment for failovers, correct? I ask just because some other backup applications call making copies of existing backups "replica", and it can introduce confusion as we would refer to that as Backup Copy.

Totaly right David. My server is a backup + disaster recovery server.
But in this case you have 2 times the same data (backup + replica) for the same VM.

And at this time i only have gigabit network, so put backup on another server slow down copy to LTO

Thanks for your response

Hi plavielle,

Thank you for clarifying -- so indeed, in this case at this time it would be required to have a disk based backup to perform tape-out.

I understand that space may be a concern, but keep in mind that with the 3-2-1 rule, the more copies you have the better. Replicas are great for many use cases, but their lack of portability like we see here is a consideration for sure.

Consider a backup to disk job with shorter retention for the servers that need to be included in the tape-out process.
