Backup throttling to avoid production issue

Post by Backup.Operator »

I'm using the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 backup agent Community Edition to perform the few large OneDrive backups to my On-premise Backup Repo, each size around 800 - 980 GB.

Based on this article:

Code: Select all

https://bp.veeam.com/vb365/guide/operate/throttling.html#sharepoint-online--onedrive-for-business
  • Can the bandwidth for downloading multiple (less than 10) OneDrive for Business backups to the On-Premises repository be throttled to prevent a global production slowdown?

Also, is there a cost calculator available to estimate the egress cost when backing up Exchange, OneDrive, and SharePoint data from the M365 platform to my On-Premises repository via Azure Express Route?

Hi Backup Operator
Can the bandwidth for downloading multiple (less than 10) OneDrive for Business backups to the On-Premises repository be throttled to prevent a global production slowdown?
You can limit the bandwidth in the backup proxy properties. This will help to not overwhelm your internet connection: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbo36 ... tml?ver=70
But you may still face throttling in the backup job on Microsofts site. Microsoft throttles too many API requests rather than bandwidth: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbo36 ... tml?ver=70
Also, is there a cost calculator available to estimate the egress cost when backing up Exchange, OneDrive, and SharePoint data from the M365 platform to my On-Premises repository via Azure Express Route?
No. But you can use Microsoft 365 tools to check how much data you have on different M365 services. That will be the amount of data the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 proxy has to read. Use that amount for the calculator on Microsofts page.
Please note, that not all endpoints from Microsoft can be accessed through Express Route. Some data has to be requested directly from the internet.

Mildur,

Thank you for the quick reply.

So if I backup from the M365 to my OnPremise repository drives, is there any Azure Express Route to traverse or settings to configure in the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 console?

You're welcome.
I cannot test it in my lab, but we don't have a specific setting for Azure Express Route.
In my understanding, you just have to make sure that Routing/DNS works for Azure Express Route and our product will be able to use it as well: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/micro ... -worldwide

Please be aware, Azure Express Route will not bring you benefits for the backup process. The API requests will still be throttled by Microsofts SharePoint environment. And the default access method (over internet) will not costs you any egress costs. Maybe you want to reconsider using the default access method instead of Express Route.
