Az Stack HCI recover as arc-vm

Post by ikbarbero »

Hi folks,

As most of the VMware guy's I'm looking for a exit plan due to Broadcom's policies. The decision is not made but one of the contenders is Azure Stack HCI. At the moment we think that this solution with the arc-vm could be a good solution as it helps us to introduce new ways of work and streamline operations between cloud and current virtualization platform.

The problem arises with backup and restore and I would like to ask for clarification about Veeam's capabilities for Arc-VMs, in support statement says:
12.1 (build 12.1.0.2131)
Excluding support for Azure Arc VM management.
Azure Arc VMs in a "Running" state can be backed up. Upon restore, these VMs become standard Hyper-V workloads. If a VM is restored (and the original is no longer present) within the period Azure Arc can reconnect (45 days), the Azure Arc connection should persist.
I understand that we can, without any downside, backup Arc-VMs but only recover it as Hyper-V regular VMs (and maybe later convert or migrate with Azure Migrate ¿?), but the second part about reconnect in 45 days really confuses me.

Does it means that if I recover a deleted VM within 45 days, should it reconnect as Arc-VM?. What happend if I recover an exisitng Arc-VM without overwriting it, only shutting down and renaming the original one?

Is there any roadmap to intrudice further arc-vm support in upcoming versions of VBR? 12.2 or later?

We plan to have stack hci validated hardware in a few weeks up and running to test the solution, so any advise for us regarding backup/restore will be really much appreciated.

Azure Stack HCI VMs backed up by Veeam Backup and Replication just restore as Hyper-V VMs. Veeam has no control over its status as Azure Arc enabled VM.

If a VM was Arc-enabled, and the original is deleted, that VM restored by Veeam within 45 days would maintain its Arc connection, only if no other VMs are using that Arc connection.

However I believe Microsoft is considering some enhancements as to how VMs created in Hyper-V Manager could show up as Azure Arc enabled in the future.

As an example - this is a common problem with Azure Arc today. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answe ... -stack-hci
