We have a need to use Azure storage as a repository with immutability set at 90 days. We must use Azure due to compliance needs. I read Gostev’s comments post523482.html#p523482 and “Veeam Data Cloud Vault” looks like the perfect option for this need. On the Azure marketplace, I priced 10TB of storage with 6 TB of data which comes to $7200/yr for the plan and $4320/yr billed monthly for the data. Total annual cost is $11,520.
Now our ownership wants me to compare pricing with plain-vanilla Azure blob storage.
Per comments in the above thread, I should plan on hot blob storage. Also 90 days of immutability would be good cost-wise. Using the MS pricing estimator https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/calculator/ I come up with much lower cost than above. Comparing apples-to-apples, I chose type block blob, standard performance tier (per https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure ... verview,it says standard is best for most scenarios in Azure storage). I also chose account type Gen purpose v2, flat namespace, hot tier and LRS (the same as Veeam Data Cloud Vault as far as I can tell). This price comes to only $215/mo! I am not sure what to enter for the operations and data transfer section of the MS pricing estimator. I am not sure how to come up with a accurate measure of operations and/or data transfer. I’ve been recommending that we go to Veeam Data Cloud Vault in the Azure Marketplace due to all of this.
So, what am I missing?

Re: Azure Veeam Data Cloud Vault vs Block blob hot storage as a repository
Hello,
pricing is something where Veeam R&D is not really involved and technically there is no difference. It can be, that a direct Azure contract is cheaper, yes (I remember that feedback when we launched it).
You could compare your math with https://www.veeam.com/calculators/simple/vbr/machines . The API costs is something Vault does not charge for. Also the support path is a bit different. For Veeam Vault, you call Veeam support. While Azure Blob is Microsoft support. If that makes a difference for you.
If it still turns out that direct Azure contract is cheaper, then there is no technical reason for Veeam Data Cloud Vault (support topic aside).
Best regards,
Hannes

Re: Azure Veeam Data Cloud Vault vs Block blob hot storage as a repository
Veeam Vault is all inclusive price (API and egress for restore), thus the big difference. You would have to pay separately for these if you go direct to Azure.
But yes, I hope our alliance team can work with Microsoft to reduce the price down the road.
