Post by rhap4boy »

Where can I find latest configuration guide on Veeam with HPE StoreOnce Catalyst over Fibre Channel? Thank you!

Hi Jimmy, welcome to the forums.

Please see our Best Practices guide here; it has both a link to our KB article on Deduplication Appliance Best Practices as well as a guide to the HPE + Veeam reference architecture guide for Veeam Backup and Replication and Storeonce.

Thanks!

Thank you for the reply. I am trying to understand the guide about best practice on zoning on page 13.

HPE Reference Configuration for Veeam Backup & Replication version 12 with HPE StoreOnce and HPE StoreEver.

Is it suggesting single initiator single target zoning?

Hi Jimmy, this question is unrelated to our processing. I would ask HPE for this.
Btw. if you have fast ethernet connections to the StoreOnce, they work faster over Ethernet.

I asked HPE to comment here and they are working on it.

In the meantime you can check here the official guidelines:
https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/do ... 8AC4C.html
"StoreOnce Catalyst over Fibre Channel does not use or rely on any external multipath drivers. Connections are balanced using StoreOnce Catalyst over Fibre Channel internal algorithms. Catalyst over Fibre Channel ignores installed multipath drivers."

I interpret this in a way that you can have multiple pathes to the storage and the driver will figure out the best path when needed (without MPIO or other multi path drivers).

I would zone and cable 4 pathes for 2 HBAs as this is industry standard.
HBA1 - SO Controller 1 Port 1
HBA1 - SO Controller 2 Port 1
HBA2 - SO Controller 1 Port 2
HBA2 - SO Controller 2 Port 2

HPE can conrrect me here if I am wrong.

Feedback from HPE is the following:

The "=>" shows who is initiating the connection. Depending on the FibreChannel switch type the zoning is bi-directional and the Zones for Catalyst Copy need to be implemented only once and not twice in each direction. In the end at Catalyst Copy the StoreOnce Systems needs to be able to initiate connections in both directions.

For Zoning with a connection in each Fabric (preferred)
More FC Switch ports used, but more resilient. This way Fabric/Controller/HBA down situations do not affect overall processing and only minimum flow change happens.

Fabric 1
Veeam Repo Gateway for StoreOnce 1 HBA 1 => StoreOnce 1 Controller 1 Port 1
Veeam Repo Gateway for StoreOnce 1 HBA 1 => StoreOnce 1 Controller 2 Port 1

…additionally if Catalyst Copy is used
Veeam Repo Gateway for StoreOnce 2 HBA 1 => StoreOnce 2 Controller 1 Port 1
Veeam Repo Gateway for StoreOnce 2 HBA 1 => StoreOnce 2 Controller 2 Port 1
StoreOnce 1 Controller 1 Port 1 => StoreOnce 2 Controller 1 Port 1
StoreOnce 1 Controller 2 Port 1 => StoreOnce 2 Controller 2 Port 1
StoreOnce 2 Controller 1 Port 1 => StoreOnce 1 Controller 1 Port 1
StoreOnce 2 Controller 2 Port 1 => StoreOnce 1 Controller 2 Port 1

Fabric 2
Veeam Repo Gateway for StoreOnce 1 HBA 2 => StoreOnce 1 Controller 1 Port 2
Veeam Repo Gateway for StoreOnce 1 HBA 2 => StoreOnce 1 Controller 2 Port 2

…additionally if Catalys Copy is used
Veeam Repo Gateway for StoreOnce 2 HBA 2 => StoreOnce 2 Controller 1 Port 2
Veeam Repo Gateway for StoreOnce 2 HBA 2 => StoreOnce 2 Controller 2 Port 2
StoreOnce 1 Controller 1 Port 2 => StoreOnce 2 Controller 1 Port 2
StoreOnce 1 Controller 2 Port 2 => StoreOnce 2 Controller 2 Port 2
StoreOnce 2 Controller 1 Port 2 => StoreOnce 1 Controller 1 Port 2
StoreOnce 2 Controller 2 Port 2 => StoreOnce 1 Controller 2 Port 2

For Zoning with minimum Switch Port count

StoreOnce 1 Controller 1 Port 1 => StoreOnce 2 Controller 1 Port 1

Veeam Repo Gateway for StoreOnce 2 HBA 2 => StoreOnce 2 Controller 2 Port 1
