VBR 12.2 Dell Data Domain DD OS version support

Post by stewsie »

Hi

Looking through the release notes for VBR 12.2 it mentions support for DD as shown below

Dell Data Domain (DD OS version 7.3 to 8.0) with the DDBoost license. Both Ethernet and Fibre Channel
(FC) connectivity are supported.

We are using DD 7.13 which is a supported version as far as Dell are concerned. Is there a reason why Veeam is only supporting 7.3 to 8.0?

Thanks

Hi,

There were no changes in the DD OS version support in 12.2 actually, the last change around DD OS version support was in 12.1

I believe the reason is Dell's support matrix and support lifecycle for the DDBoost module which we must use to interact with Data Domain. @foggy could you please expand on this and provide some specific details.

Thanks
Anton

7.1 release notes stated which is interesting as we are at v7.13

Dell Data Domain (DD OS version 7.3 to 7.12) with the DDBoost license. Both Ethernet and Fibre Channel
(FC) connectivity are supported.

Hi Paul, DDOS versions before 7.3 are not supported due to not having all the required APIs we're using for backup immutability implementation (and are EOL by Dell anyway).

DDOS 7.13 is fully supported (falls between 7.3 and 8.0). Do you have any particular concerns?

Ha! I guess Paul has simply misread 7.13 for 7.1.3, which would then be below the minimum version supported by Veeam (7.3)... even I did not mention this mistake because of how strongly he asserted that his version is outside of the supported scope! It's funny how brain works :D

Oh, to me 7.3 is a higher release than 7.13 I think I was just looking at the first number so it is my mistake

Thanks for clarifying

Back again. So here is an example as to why I am confused

If I go for a walk and walk 7.13 miles and continued I would reach 7.14 .15 .16 etc up to 7.3 So to me 7.13 is a lower version than 7.3 hence my confusion

If you supported 7.03 then that would make sense. Sorry I am confused and possibly stupid

Unless you are saying as we are on 7.13 then we are supported as you support 7.3 7.4 7.5 all the way to 7.13 and on to 8.0?

As I said I might be stupid but it isn't that clear

After 29 goes 30, not 3.
Just like after 9 goes 10, not 1

Correct series:
... 7.3 7.4 7.5 7.6 7.7 7.8 7.9 7.10 7.11 7.12 7.13 7.14 7.15 ...

We're not numbering it like that :) this thread is talking about DD OS which is a product of Dell.

You're thinking of it as lexicographic sorting, while arithmetic (numerical) sorting is typically used for numbers. It would be the way you assumed if there was another '.' between the last two digits.

Had the same issue when dealing with the v11.x to 12.1 upgrade in our lab - Dell's nomenclature is to use the "."-delimited numbering to denote major/minor version and trains within.

So yeah, easy to get confused. For example: 7.3 is a higher version than 7.1, but a lower version than 7.10.1.15

Hi all,

for an upgrade in-place installation on a DataDomain (head swap), Dell's engineering team's asking us to using the new DDOS version 8.1.0.10

So, we're facing a possible trouble if Veeam 12.2 does not currently support the last release of DDOS. Of course we can ask Dell, if is possible to use a lower version to doing our activity and wait for a feedback. But the customers asking when the DDOS 8.1.* will be certified by Veeam.

Maybe do you have idea about the news of compatibily release?

Sincerely

Hi guys,

DDOS 8.0 is supported (https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... kup-target)

Current deployments are delivered at 8.0 but Dell recommends going for 8.1.0.10. (security patches)

Any news on DDOS 8.1 support?

Best regards
