Veeam Backup & Replication Best Practices for Azure Stack HCI

Post by ChristianBltn »

Hello,

I had an Azure Stack HCI Cluster with one-Node on HPE DL380 Gen11.
This was a test environment, that I can no longer use, that's why I can't open a case

I managed to implement the Azure Stack HCI Cluster as a Hyper-V Cluster to my Veeam Inventory.
I did a Full VM Restore and File Level Restore successfully without any Problems.

My Problem/Question is:
In Case, my Azure Stack HCI VMs get deleted on the Azure Portal or I have to Restore the VMs on a New Cluster. For Example, if I have to redeploy on my existing Hosts, I cant restore them consistent on my on-Prem Node and in the Azure Portal. The VMs do not belong to the Azure Stack HCI Cluster after the Restore. I know that Veeam restores the VMs as normal Hyper-V Workloads according to the 3 Veeam KB articles I found regarding Azure Stack HCI with Veeam.
I tried contacting my Veeam Partner and researched Microsoft Articles but couldn't find an appropriate Answer to my Problem
Adding the VM through an Azure Arc Script is not an optimal Solution, because an Azure Stack HCI VM has several Features that an Azure-Arc-Onboarded VM doesn't have.

Does anyone know a Way or a Concept to back up Azure Stack HCI VMs consistently?

From what you've written, it sounds like you would like restored VMs to consistently come back as "Azure Stack HCI Azure Arc VMs". Please correct me if that was not the intent of your question. Azure Stack HCI has some API limitations where unfortunately we do not have the ability to register restored VMs as Arc VMs ourselves. Only if the resource bridge recognizes the VM will it come back as an Arc VM. I'm told these limitations are being worked on, on the Microsoft side and there should be better solutions for this in the future.

Yes by consistently i meant that the VMs are recognized as Azure Stack HCI VMs. This is very important, because Features like Azure Patch Management are with no additional Costs for Azure Stack HCI VMs for example.
