Change storeonce name and IP
Hello,
My customer will move one of his StoreOnce and wants to change name + IP AND connection from Ethernet to FC
This storeonce is used today to store Agent backup only on a single catalyst with hundreds folders as mentioned in this KB : https://www.veeam.com/kb2987
What are the step we need to do to update Veeam configuration ?
Is it possible to update the repository folders or do I need to create new one , point the jobs to the news repositories and remove the old ones.
Does veeam be able to find all the backup and link them to the associated job after a rescan or do I need to manualy assign each of them ?
Thanks for your help.
Veeam is on V12

H matteu,
Unfortunately, you will need to create new repositories in this case, and you will need to manually assign them as you'll be creating new repositories.
So remove the old repository from configuration, add the new one, be sure to click the checkbox to "Search the Repository for existing backups", and once added/rescanned, you will be able to re-map the jobs to the backups.

Re: Change storeonce name and IP
Hi,
Thanks for your answer.
Why exactly do I need to create new one ? (To improve my knowledge)
I think I will not be able to remove the old repository without create the new one because the old one is assigne to jobs...
So I guess the steps are :
1- Create all new Repo
2 - Assign all new repo to existing jobs
3 - Remove old repo
4 - Remap jobs to backup
If I want to keep the existing repo name, I could start to rename all existing one with _old
Am I right ?

Re: Change storeonce name and IP
Correct, regrettably this is will require a bit of "juggling" for these repositories.
The new one is because changing the IP and the connection type is not possible after the repository creation. If you check on the existing Storeonce Repositories, you'll see you cannot change either, so we need to re-add it here. (This is a good time to use hostnames if the client is not already planning this)
As for the steps, it's best to remove the original repository first.
If you try to add the same catalyst store/path, it will produce an error that the same path/catalyst store has already been added; adding the same path to two different repositories is not supported and there are safety checks in place to prevent this.

Re: Change storeonce name and IP
Thanks for the explanation.
name + ip will change, I think we don t care about adding store once repository with ip or fqdn, the procédure is the same right ?
For sure, name will be used !
Ok for the last point .
So :
Export on a csv file all job and associated repos
create a temp repo
Point all existing job to this temp repo
Remove all store once repo
Create new ones
Associate new repo with job with csv file
Map backup
It will be very very boring ...
I could automate some of these task and maybe all, I don t know but very complicated only for a rename + connection update.
If connection was keep on ethernet , I would be able to update storeonce information ?
1- Create all new Repo
2 - Assign all new repo to existing jobs
3 - Remove old repo
4 - Remap jobs to backup

Re: Change storeonce name and IP
OK I have some more details.
Connection type will be updated from Ethernet to FC but we will continue to access the StoreOnce as "NAS" mode and not SAN.
I mean, this will not impact how the repository must be added into Veeam repository and not check "FC is used to access the StoreOnce".
With this additionnal information, is it possible to just update the existing repositories maybe with powershell ?
I don't find a "Folder" parameter for the command Set-VBRBackupRepository

Re: Change storeonce name and IP
Hi matteu,
I guess I'm not quite following on the using FC but not connecting over Fibrechannel, but ultimately it still will not matter -- the connection is set at repository creation, and currently you need to remove and re-add the repository to change the IP.
So unfortunately if the repositories are added by IP address instead of by hostname, remove and readd will be required.
As for no "folder" option on the cmdlet, Storeonce doesn't really have a concept of "folders" like we're using here, so the KB article is a bit of a trick. So you would need to repeat the steps in the KB article when re-adding with the corrected hostname/ip.
Thanks!

Re: Change storeonce name and IP
Sorry, I have some lack of knowledge about physical connectivity. It will be connected with FC but not on SAN fabric.
I saw the environment today and all the repos are setup with the name.
However, if I can't update the repository, Veeam will not be able to find the repository after the physical name of the StoreOnce will be updated.
I think about 2 solutions :
-Execute all the step mentioned (hard way)
-Create a CNAME and stay with old name in Veeam

Re: Change storeonce name and IP
Word of advise here from someone who did change a StoreOnce from FC to IP.
This was about 3 years ago and we've lost quite some backups because the repository rescan didn't recognize all the backup chains in the "new" repository.
As a consequence for this rescan, which only threw warnings instead of errors, those backups weren't recoverable. I think it was a bug in VBR which caused this and should have been resolved by now, but I never did this again and can't confirm if this won't happen again.

Re: Change storeonce name and IP
Would probably be best if you can get away with adding CNAME indeed. It's great there are names, and CNAME is probably your best and easiest approach then.
